Rita Moreno Discusses a Botched Abortion She Underwent Prior to Roe v. Wade: "I Might Have Died"

Rita Moreno Discusses a Botched Abortion She Underwent Prior to Roe v. Wade:

Rita Moreno is relating her personal abortion experience and voicing her concerns for people who would be forced to have unsafe abortions after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

By a vote of 6 to 3, the Supreme Court reversed the landmark decision on Friday, erasing the constitutional right to abortion.

Following the judgement, 90-year-old Moreno discussed her abortion after discovering she was pregnant by her then-boyfriend Marlon Brando.

She told Variety on Friday that she became pregnant before Roe v. Wade granted women the right to an abortion in every state in 1973.

Brando advised her to get an abortion, and she "found a physician via acquaintances," she told the magazine. He was a legitimate physician; Marlon paid him $500, as opposed to a quack.

However, as she returned home, she had bleeding, and it was subsequently determined that the abortion was partial.

"I was taken to the hospital by Marlon. They informed me that I had a "disturbed pregnancy." "Moreno remembered. "The doctor did nothing other than cause me to bleed. In other words, he did it incorrectly. I did not realise it at the time, but I might have died. What a muddle! What a terrible disaster!"

She recalled being "ecstatic" when Roe v. Wade initially authorised abortions, but she is now "depressed" by the Supreme Court's decision.

"Hilary Clinton warned everyone about this," the celebrity said to the publication. "I'm astonished but not shocked since I knew it coming."

Continued Moreno: "I consider the young females. In the most severe case, females who get pregnant as a result of rape or incest. Unjust is not a strong enough term to describe the situation, yet it is unfair."

She continued by declaring that she is prepared to "get dirty" with her fellow "loud mouths."

"We are abundant in number. What are we going to do about this, I wonder? This has, if anything, reinvigorated us."

The Supreme Court's decision overturns over fifty years of precedent and will drastically alter the landscape of women's reproductive rights by empowering individual states to determine whether to permit the operation. In the following months, it is anticipated that over half of the states would implement near-total prohibitions. The verdict will split the nation, with the majority of blue states permitting abortion and the majority of red states severely restricting it.

Justice Samuel Alito stated in the majority decision, "We hold that Roe and Casey must be reversed." "The Constitution contains no mention of abortion, and no fundamental clause implicitly protects this freedom."

Alito remarked, "It is time to obey the Constitution and restore the abortion matter to the people's elected representatives." The 78-page ruling was supported by three Trump-appointed justices: Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.
